Traditional non-digital and non-mechanical accessories such as shoes, hats, shirts, sneakers, braceletes, and coats, hardly fall under cateogry of “most technologicaly innovative”. But Japanese startup Pileus has found a way to turn a traditionally mundane fashion item into “wow”-inspiring digital toy through its Pileus Internet Umbrella.

The umbrella is perpetually connected to the internet through Wi-Fi. The umbrella includes a camera, motion center, GPS, and digital compass that converge to create a photo-sharing function and a 3-D Map. Streaming photos and map images are viewed from the inner-surface of the opened umbrella, and are controlled by flicking a switch on the umbrella handle.

Pileus plans to further addadvertising, geo-coding and telecommunication functions in the future, perhaps making tomorrow’s umbrella more akin to tpday’s mobile devices.
