When it opened in April 2007, The Santa Monica Civic Center parking garage became the first parking facility ever to become certified by LEED, a national program that develops standards for environmentaly sustainable construction.

The 6 story, 882 space gargage cost an estimated $29 million to build. It includes natural and florescent lighting, electricity-generating solar panels, and system to treat storm and runoff water to preserves natural resources, conserve energy, and reduce waste. The 290,000 square foot structure consists mainly of recycled concrete, glass, and steel.
